Goodyear said it plans to move most of its radial truck tire production from its Danville, Virginia, plant to other plants under its umbrella. A Goodyear spokesman confirmed the move is part of the Akron, Ohio-based tire maker's global transformation plan.

The spokesperson noted that "Goodyear plans to refocus the Danville, Virginia plant's business on compounding and aircraft tires. As part of this plan, Goodyear is discussing the staffing impact of the Danville plant with the United Steelworkers union. The company's goal is to enhance the competitiveness of the Danville plant and retain as many jobs as possible."

The Danville plant opened in 1966 and is one of two commercial medium-duty truck tire plants in Goodyear's North American manufacturing network. The plant can produce up to 11,000 medium-duty truck tires per day and also produces aircraft tires. Goodyear's other heavy-duty radial tire production plant in Topeka, Kansas, has a daily production capacity of 5,500 tires. At present, Goodyear officials have not yet disclosed which of the company's plants will undertake the heavy-duty radial tire production business of the Danville plant.
